Construction is underway
Construction has started on the Cheltenham Recreation Reserve playground upgrade.
A new playground is coming soon! 🎉
We’re building a big, exciting playground where kids of all ages and abilities can play, explore, and have fun! It will be full of cool things to climb, swing and splash in.
The playground will also have special features from the past, like a real old steamroller and the old Cheltenham train station building that will give you a nice shady spot to rest and watch the fun.
The new playground will feature:
✨ Adventure‑ready custom treehouse
💧 Cool‑down misted water play
🧗 Climbing tower with a whooshing slide
🌀 Spin‑and‑grin spinner bowl
🐨 Bouncy spring rockers for little adventurers
🌿 Explore‑and‑discover nature play zones
🎠 Swings for every age and stage
🚂 The much loved steamroller—restored and ready to explore
🚻 Freshly improved public toilets
🏫 Shaded chill‑out space under the historic Station building
As part of these works, we’ll be:
- Demolishing the existing playground.
- Installing new playground equipment.
- Restoring the historic steamroller and integrating it into the play space.
- Repurposing the Cheltenham Station down building to provide shaded seating and viewing.
- Creating new pathways, seating and landscaping.
- Improving accessibility to encourage independent play for people of all abilities.
- Using natural materials to strengthen connection with nature.
- Planting indigenous species to enhance biodiversity.
Timing
Works are scheduled to start in early February until July 2026. The playground will be closed for approximately five months, weather permitting, while we undertake the upgrade. While we work to raise the bar at Cheltenham Recreation Reserve, little adventurers can run off their steam at the nearby Cheltenham Park playground off Park Road.
What to expect during the works
- We will close the playground for the duration of construction.
- Contractor vehicles will be on‑site while we complete the works.
- There may be noise and dust associated with construction activities.
